Letterkenny’s crumbling roads are worsened by Irish Water silence, says Cathaoirleach

first_imgThere will be no roads left in Letterkenny if Irish Water continues to refuse meetings with the Municipal District, Cathaoirleach Gerry McMonagle has warned. The poor conditions of some of the busiest routes in the town were highlighted at this week’s meeting of local councillors, who have again called on Irish Water to meet and discuss their planned works.“We are not getting the meeting we are promised,” Cllr McMonagle said. “I made a request as the Cathaoirleach and not only did they (Irish Water) refuse, they didn’t even answer us. “If they have a work schedule and a timetable for works in Letterkenny, why can’t they come and speak to us?“It is not enough that we are being treated abysmally by Irish Water and our roads are crumbling around us,” he said.Cllr Ciaran Brogan added that it was a ‘dark and bad day’ when the town council was abolished due to the loss of discretionary money for roadworks in Letterkenny.“The highest volume of traffic in the North West is in Letterkenny, and we can’t fill potholes. All we are getting is a lip service and it’s not good enough.” Cllr McMonagle said Letterkenny has lost approximately €350,000 from its roads, and that other ways of sourcing money to make sure carriageways are safe should be looked at.“If Irish Water takes any longer, we’re not going to have roads, because the roads are crumbling around us,” Cllr McMonagle said.Irish Water has advised the council that they prepared to meet with Elected Members at their bi-monthly clinic. The council agreed to issue a further request to Irish Water to attend the next Letterkenny MD meeting and make the Director of Service aware of the Elected Members’ demands.Letterkenny’s crumbling roads are worsened by Irish Water silence, says Cathaoirleach was last modified: May 11th, 2018 by Rachel McLaughlinShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:CLLR GERRY MCMONAGLEIrish WaterLetterkenny Municipal Districtlast_img
