DONEGAL ACTIVIST CALLS FOR PUBLIC TO OPPOSE G8 SUMMIT MEETING

first_imgA Donegal based independent activist has called for widespread international opposition to the G8 summit which is planned to take place next year in County Fermanagh. The call by Micheál Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig comes following the announcement by the British Prime Minister David Cameron that the summit will be held at the Lough Erne golf resort near Enniskillen on the 17th and 18th of June 2013.Next year’s G8 Summit, which is the first to be held in Ireland, is a meeting of the leaders of the world’s top eight wealthiest countries and will be attended by amongst others, US President Barack Obama, German Prime Minister Angela Merkel, British Prime Minister David Cameron and Russian President Vladamir Putin. Criticising the event, Mr Mac GiollaEasbuig said it was important there was mass opposition to the summit and said such events were the starting point for many of today’s global problems.“People need to realise the reasoning behind this summit”he said. “This is a gathering of the leaders of the world’s wealthiest countries, whoseprimary objective is to create the conditions for global corporations to exploit human and natural resources for profit. Their manifesto is essentially the perpetuation of global inequality and it is a manifesto enforced through exploitation and war”.Micheál continued, “we witness the devastating impact of the global elite’s policies every day. In Europe, for example, in order to rescue a failed private banking system, workers and their communities are being driven into poverty; public services are being privatised; and pay and working conditions are being slashed.”“Meanwhile, with the full backing of the United States, Israeli bombs currently rain down on the civilian population of Gaza. Over 100 Palestinians have been slaughtered by the Israeli Occupation Forces, including dozens of women and children. It is an affront that war mongers such as Barack Obama will come to Ireland next June to plan the next phase of their war games and profiteering.” ‘’It should be noted that Britain is the current chair of the G8 and so its government selects the location of the summit. I would like to remind David Cameron and the British government that Fermanagh is not part of Britain’’.Mac Giolla Easbuig concluded by saying that in the coming months he hope to see a groundswell of opposition to the G8 summit and calls on all progressive groups and individuals to get involved and publicly voice opposition to the G8 taking place anywhere in Ireland.“It is crucial that we mobilise mass opposition to this summit both here in Ireland and internationally. Those across the globe who oppose war and the exploitation of human and natural resources to boost the profits of global capital come to Fermanagh next June and show determined opposition to the G8 and all it represents.“This is not simply about the people of Ireland, but is in fact an opportunity to demonstrate to the world that our problems are indeed global, but must be resolved, not by the global elite, but by the global dispossessed.’’ DONEGAL ACTIVIST CALLS FOR PUBLIC TO OPPOSE G8 SUMMIT MEETING was last modified: November 21st, 2012 by StephenShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:G8 SummitMICHEAL MACGIOLLA EASBUIGOPPOSITIONlast_img read more
