38 Deaths in 3 Days: Ebola Wreaks Havoc in Lofa

first_imgThe Ebola virus is taking a deadly toll on the northern county of Lofa where the deadly disease initially crossed over from neighboring Guinea.  More and more people in that county continue to be victimized by the virus. In a statistical report provided by the Lofa Health Team on the status of the situation in the county, made available to the Daily Observer Wednesday, August 13, there were 38 deaths recorded in three days.  These include confirmed Ebola cases, probable and suspected. This report covers the three-day period August 8 to 11, 2014. The number of new contact cases within this period (August 8-11) stands at 81.The total deaths in the county since May 29, 2014 to date stands at 221. Lofa is so far one of the most highly affected counties. The update also disclosed that the number of patients presently at the Foya Care Center (August 8-11), one of the two Ebola centers in the country, stands at 81.New reported death amongst health workers (August 8-11) is one, totaling 12 deaths since the outbreak in May.During this period, 45 specimens were taken and tested: 15 were positive, 8 negative and the rest are still pending.President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf recently said she is saddened by the fast pace at which the virus is spreading in the country, especially to other communities that were not previously affected. “And what this means is that our people are still not listening to the pieces of advice and instructions that are being given.”  Such instructions include constant hand washing; avoiding handshakes and touching in general; immediate reporting of cases of high fever, vomiting and bleeding; and avoiding touching anyone suspected to have the virus.Meanwhile it is being reported that nine members of a single family of 15 were being removed from the Macenta road community, in the capital Voinjama, to the Foya Care Center. This is, however, another worrying concern for the people of Voinjama City, as it wrestles in the grip of the virus.Macenta road community is located just after the Mandingo quarter where eight persons died few days ago, and is also a predominantly Mandingo community.According to sources, six members of this family of 15 had already died from the virus. The nine remaining family members were being taken to the Foya Care Center.President Sirleaf, while declaring a State of Emergency last week, said the Ebola threat continues to grow as a result of ignorance, poverty as well as entrenched religious and cultural practices. She indicated that these continue to exacerbate the spread of the disease, especially in the counties. The Liberian President added that actions allowed by statute under the public health law are no longer adequate to deal with the Ebola epidemic, as comprehensively and holistically, as the outbreak requires. The President noted that the scope and skills of the epidemic now exceed the capacity and statutory mandates of any one government agency or ministry. The Ebola virus disease, and the ramifications and the consequences thereof, now constitute an outright national calamity.Health authorities in Lofa County said due to the influx of suspected cases, patients are now being transported in pickup trucks, which have no sirens, rather than the ambulances, whose sirens are causing a lot of trauma for residents.Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare Ebola Situation Report (SitRep) has recorded that since the outbreak of the virus in March to August 11, at least 149 confirmed deaths from 166 confirmed positive victims.Among the 149 have been 37 health workers out of 86, who now fallen prey to the virus. However, the SitRep lists total deaths in confirmed, probable and suspected cases as 355, for the record.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

How IoT could radically change your favorite sci-fi movies

first_imgFollow the Puck From: Doc Emmet Brown To: Marty Mcfly Dear Marty,If my calculations are correct. the last time we saw each other was the year 1985. Ten years later, in the year 1995, you’ve followed in your father’s footsteps and become a science fiction writer.Marty, I am writing to alarm you about a major disturbance in the future of technology. This technology will derail the ubiquity of flying cars, self-lacing Nikes, and hoverboards. The very technology that you’re using for the first time in 1995, the internet, yes my dear Marty, it will alter the future of mankind in ways you can’t imagine! Great Scott! Marty, you currently use your phone and a modem to access the internet. In the future, twenty years from now, we will be on the dawn of an era where every device around you will access the internet. These devices will talk to each other! You don’t understand, but this is the dawn of IOT aka Internet of Things. Your car, your phone, your air conditioner, each device will have the capacity to talk to the “smart” devices around it.You don’t understand, but this technology is IoT aka the Internet of Things. Your car, your phone, your air conditioner, each device will have the capacity to talk to the “smart” devices around it.Marty, I risk this automated email because I know that when it finds you, you’ll have the ability to avoid the mistakes that other science fiction writers made when writing about the future. I’ve listed several well-known science fiction films. Some titles you may or may not know. I’ve taken the time to provide you a synopsis of each and how IoT technology will impact each!Blade Runner – Based in 2019, set in a dystopian Los Angeles that feels like Hong Kong sprinkled with flying cars and buildings shaped like pyramids. A group of androids that resemble human beings are trying to find their creator before their batteries run out and hopefully get some re-engineering for a bunch of 1-UPs. Unfortunately for Phillip K. Dick, androids don’t dream of electric sheep and the IoT world which is upon us would have tagged these human-gobots wherever they roamed. The replicants wouldn’t have been able to fit in and the global tracking network would have told on them wherever they went, making Deckard’s job much easier. Even if Roy Batty made it into the elevator with JF Sebastian the emotion recognition system would have sensed that something was terribly wrong, never allowing them to continue to Dr. Tyrell floor. No late night chess.Minority Report – In the year 2054, future crimes aka Precrimes are monitored and foretold by a trio of Ms. Cleo’s known as “The Precogs,” who proactively work with law enforcement and the film’s protagonist, John Anderton to prevent crimes from happening in the future. An IoT world will eliminate the need for Precogs or a Precrime unit! Emotions like anger will be monitored and reported to the emotions department of the local law enforcement who will track and interact with IoT devices around you to prevent you from committing crimes. Thinking about killing your wife’s secret lover? Forget it. Your smart car won’t allow you to drive to his home until your anger levels have decreased. The Matrix – A hacker named Neo is recruited by a group of humans who’ve broken free of the digital matrix controlling humans in the future. IoT will place us in a matrix and it will be almost impossible to escape. We’ll connect to the IoT matrix by the devices and machines in our environment, learning, reporting and calculating our every move. This story should be rewritten and feature Neo as a human who simply doesn’t want to have his every action monitored and reported. Regardless of what pill you choose, that day is coming.Terminator – In the future year of 2029, an artificial machine intelligence, a computer system known as Skynet, has taken over the world. The humans who rebel against Skynet are led by John Connor. In the film, Skynet will send a Terminator, a killing robot, to the past to find and kill Sarah Connor, the mother of John Connor — before he’s born. In an IoT world, a revolt will be futile. Each human will be digitally marked and regardless of where you go, you’ll interact with devices that know you, report and share data about you. Marty, there will be no resistance. IoT is the future. IoT is Skynet.I realize that these words may come to you as a surprise. In the year 1995, you’re just getting familiar with chat rooms and it is hard to put faith in an Internet that connects machines to one another, an Internet without modems and more importantly, without AOL.However, 20 years from now, this will be so. Work hard. Write well Futureboy, and know that every device in Hill Valley will one day connected to the internet.P.S. — Our trip to the future altered the future of baseball! The Cubs won the World Series a year later! Great Scott! Tips from Pixar: Maintaining Creativity Over The Long Haul

first_imgAbout to embark on an ambitious project? Learn a few lessons from Pixar on helping your creativity go the distance.Pixar films, like most animated film, can take years to make. In fact, from start to finish they can take upwards of 4-7 years to complete, although the animated production may only last for about 6-8 intensive months. So how do Pixar’s world renown storytellers maintain their creative juices over such a long haul? Here are a few insights into how they achieve such a feat, and how you can too. Meticulous MethodThe process of creating an animated film gives rise to some of the essential structure that helps to refine and maintain creative quality throughout the whole endeavor. Many years of preparation go into the story, structure and pacing of the film, well before any expensive, time-consuming and technically challenging computer generated 3D animation is attempted. As Abraham Lincoln once said “Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe.” So it is with Pixar’s films and so it should be with any project.Getting your project right on paper, creating fast iterations of inexpensive mockups and repeatedly testing and improving them is a great discipline for any creative. This Disney blog takes you through each department’s involvement in creating Monster University from scratch, providing a simple overview of the whole process from story to final rendering. If you’re about to start creating your own animated masterpiece then you should definitely check out Pixar’s behind the scenes videos which provide plenty of insights into their creative process from all sorts of artistic and managerial perspectives.Though not a Pixar film, as a bonus check out this short explanation of how to create an animated feature film from Steve Carell of Despicable Me 1&2 fame.Building DesignOne of the less obvious elements of Pixar’s immense creativity reserves is the strategic design of it’s studio space. What’s most often picked up on in behind the scenes videos at Pixar, is the way in which each animator can customise their own little cubicle space in anyway they wish.  However what’s more important to generating creativity is the spaces in between those cubicles. In this insightful post from The 99 Percent they review how creative companies like Pixar and Google have maximised the possibility of serendipitous interactions on stairways, hallways and eating spots through smart and intentional building design.“If a building doesn’t encourage [collaboration], you’ll lose a lot of innovation and the magic that’s sparked by serendipity. So we designed the building to make people get out of their offices and mingle in the central atrium with people they might not otherwise see.” – Steve JobsAlthough you might not be able to re-design your creative space to such an opulent degree, open plan work spaces allow people to stop by a desk for a chat, mingle with people from other teams and see what others are up to. Encouraging communal dining is also another a great way to both foster community and creativity.LeadershipEd Catmull has been near or at the top of Pixar animation studios since the beginning and in this interview with Martin Giles from the Economist he shares some of his leadership insights and reveals some of the internal working methods of Pixar. It’s a fascinating discussion and well worth a watch, largely because it demonstrates how much leadership is necessary to any successful creative endeavor. Leaders must develop a culture that promotes creativity on every level.I do believe you want a vision, so you start off with a person who has a vision for a story. And we do things to try and protect that vision and its not easy to protect it, because they feel these pressures. They also have misconceptions about the creative process sometimes. We do have these people who we give a chance to on the belief they’re right, and can rise to the occasion, and we are wrong sometimes, because we can’t see what goes on in their heads. And our measure, because we can’t see inside people’s heads, is the team. If the team is functioning well, and healthy, it will solve the problem.last_img read more

CBS All Access and Pluto TV A CBSViacom Streaming Strategy Must Now

first_imgSoon-to-be ViacomCBS chief Bob Bakish and CBS head Joe Ianniello addressed some of those concerns on the investor call after the close Tuesday. Related Popular on Variety Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg-Produced United Nations Comedy in Development at CBS Two households alike in dignity, once star-crossed Viacom and CBS are now set to enter yet another union, this one perhaps less brief than their last. Their imminent integration as ViacomCBS raises a number of questions to be answered in the coming days – that of synergies, executive leadership and overarching strategy. With CBS and Viacom making official Tuesday their plans to once again merge, one particular question, in this age of streaming-service matchups, is what will become of their over-the-top platforms. Viacom and CBS are something near opposites in the streaming sphere. Where CBS has invested in creating a dual paid subscription video-on-demand offering in the form of CBS All Access and Showtime, Viacom’s path has thus far been an inversion of its new partner, primarily pursuing an ad-supported free path after acquiring Pluto TV earlier this year. ×Actors Reveal Their Favorite Disney PrincessesSeveral actors, like Daisy Ridley, Awkwafina, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Rodriguez, reveal their favorite Disney princesses. The service boasts over 150 content suppliers – a wide-ranging lot that includes everything from Bloomberg to Fox Sports to a channel dedicated solely to old episodes of “Wahlburgers” – and a deep library of its own shows and movies from its MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, BET and Spike brands.Fresh episodes of shows that air on Viacom’s linear channels come to Pluto TV a whole 18 months later, making it clear that the service’s raison d’etre is not to replace traditional TV watching but to supplement it. Viacom is investing in its growth and attractiveness to viewers; the company has notably shifted its strategy, forgoing licensing its library content to other SVOD services in favor of beefing up Pluto with those properties.Pluto TV has grown to 18 million monthly active users, up from the 12 million-plus at the time of its acquisition announcement in January. Bakish said on the company’s Q2 earnings call in May that there would be “tens of millions” of Pluto TV-enabled devices coming online in the following months, expressing bullishness about the platform’s future.Viacom’s presence in paid subscription services includes kid-friendly Noggin – which has 2.5 million paid subscribers globally – and older-kid-friendly NickHits, plus MTV Hits and Comedy Central Now. The latter three channels can mostly be accessed via services such as Amazon Channels and the forthcoming Apple TV direct-to-consumer platform. Viacom’s primary new effort to gain ground in the direct-to-consumer pay-TV market is its BET-branded streamer, which will launch later in the year.On the studio side, Viacom has previously signaled that it is happy to use its studios to provide shows and movies to other platforms – think AwesomenessTV-produced “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” for Netflix – as it concentrates on monetizing library content via Pluto TV, which it plans to expand internationally. The merger call Tuesday revealed that Bakish plans to use the combined ViacomCBS to be a hearty supplier of third-party content to MPVDs as well as broadcast, cable and streaming platforms. Contrary to what some had predicted, the top execs indicated that there would be cross-platform integration of CBS and Viacom’s media brands, with potential for Nickelodeon, BET, MTV and Comedy Central shows to appear on CBS All Access, and for Paramount films to air on premium cable Showtime. The same goes for beefing up Viacom’s free, ad-supported platform Pluto TV with series from CBS Sports HQ and ET Live.“Mass is better, scale is better – so it’s better if they’re together,” Needham media analyst Laura Martin told Variety back in June, ahead of the announced merger.Should CBS All Access harvest Viacom’s younger-skewing media brands, it would mean a product that has the potential to capture an incredibly broad demographic spectrum, from the MTV crowd to “NCIS” loyalists.Martin sees the two entertainment conglomerates’ brands as being “perfectly complementary,” with synergies to be realized if streaming teams are merged and platforms are consolidated. To recap: CBS All Access’ muscular, albeit insular, platform is made up entirely of shows from its own flagship linear network (the “NCIS” franchise, “The Big Bang Theory,” “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert”) and exclusive, online-only originals (“The Good Fight,” “Star Trek: Discovery,” “Tell Me a Story”), offering a limited-commercial tier for $5.99 a month and an ad-free tier for $9.99 a month. Its sister service, Showtime OTT, is an extension of the premium cable network that features shows such as “Billions” and “Desus & Mero.”Combined, CBS All Access and Showtime have a healthy paying subscriber base, eight million strong – a goal achieved nearly two years ahead of time, executives there will tell you – with an ambitious target of 25 million subs, not including its international or ad-supported services, by 2020.CBS’ presence in the ad-supported video realm is less high profile, but consists of a varied portfolio that includes news-focused CBSN, local news-focused CBS Local, CBS Sports HQ and ET Live. CBS, meanwhile, is aggressively pursuing content for its own services, anticipating an $8 billion-plus investment in programming this year. Its online division has the technological infrastructure to withstand the addition of a few extra properties to its existing 38 brands, regardless of how they become integrated.Leadership at the newly named ViacomCBS Inc. will likely spend some time in the coming months nailing the details of a forward-looking digital strategy that can keep and attract subscribers, amid the soon-to-launch streamers from Disney, WarnerMedia and NBCUniversal, not to mention established streaming pure-play Netflix.Even the strongest players should be primed to keep their elbows out.“People are willing to lose money to stay in the game,” said Cowen analyst Doug Creutz.last_img read more
