Exclusive – Carver is perfect for Newcastle – but only until the summer, claims former Magpie

first_imgFormer Newcastle defender Olivier Bernard believes John Carver is the perfect man to lead Newcastle – but only until the end of the season. The Magpies are yet to replace Alan Pardew, who left earlier this month for Crystal Palace, and have handed the reins temporarily to the long-serving coach. The 50-year-old has made no secret of his desire to be given the full-time job and Bernard admits it may be in the club’s best interest.Speaking to talkSPORT, the Frenchman believes it will then give the north club the best chance of securing a ‘big-name’ manager in the summer.“Right now it’s very difficult for a new manager to come in and change things round at Newcastle,” he told the Sports Bar. “The club may want keep John [Carver] until the end of the season.“I don’t see any harm in that. John is capable of taking the team on. He knows the players and will do a good job.“In the summer it’s a different story though. They’ll have a bit more time to get a better manager.“There are a lot of fantastic managers about. John is amongst the good coaches but has never been given a role as a manager.“At the minute John should get it but, if Jose Mourinho was suddenly available, then they should give it to him.“What I mean is, if you have a ‘big-name’ coming in to Newcastle then of course, you would prefer that.”last_img read more
