Indian students set to benefit from UKs 2yr poststudy work visa offer

first_imgLondon: In a move that addresses a long-standing demand to boost Indian student numbers choosing British universities, the UK government on Wednesday announced a new two-year post-study work visa route for all international students. The new ‘Graduate’ route, to be in place by next year, will be open to all overseas nationals who have valid UK immigration status as a student and have successfully completed a course of study in any subject at undergraduate level or above at a government-approved UK higher education institution. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who has effectively re-instated a policy ended by his predecessor Theresa May around nine years ago, said the change would see students “unlock their potential” to begin careers in the UK. “The new Graduate Route will mean talented international students, whether in science and maths or technology and engineering, can study in the UK and then gain valuable work experience as they go on to build successful careers, said UK home secretary Priti Patel, the senior-most Indian-origin member of Johnson’s Cabinet. The UK ended its two-year post-study work visa offer during May’s term as UK home secretary in 2012, widely seen as responsible for a major drop in student numbers from countries like India. “The withdrawal of the PSW [post-study work] visa was attributed with a decline in international student recruitment in the UK from key markets, notably India. Between 2010-11 and 2016-17, the number of higher education students from India more than halved,” noted a report by the UK’s All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for International Students. The government’s latest announcement was widely welcomed by university chiefs and representatives, who highlight that Indian students were particularly prone to make their higher education choices based on being able to gain some work experience at the end of their degree. “Although 82 per cent of our Indian graduates are satisfied with their careers wherever they are working, we know that they value the opportunity to spend some time in the UK working after their degree. This visa will make it significantly easier for them to do that, said Vivienne Stern, Director, Universities UK International, which has been lobbying for such a visa for many years. “The UK ranks first for international student satisfaction overall, compared to other major study destinations, but having a more attractive post-study work offer will open the UK up to even more international students. It will also allow employers in all parts of the UK to benefit from access to talented graduates from around the world, she said. Indian students coming to the UK registered a hike over the last three years, hitting around 22,000 in the year ending June 2018. This was a 42 per cent increase on the previous year, a reversal from a downward trend in the past. “I’m delighted that numbers of Indian students coming to study in the UK are constantly increasing, having doubled over the last three years. Last year alone we saw a massive 42 per cent increase. This exciting announcement will help ensure that the UK remains one of the best destinations for students across the world, said Sir Dominic Asquith, British High Commissioner to India.last_img read more

Join these pricks for dinner

first_imgThese guys add a wicked twist to your dinner time. Meet Humour Me, a repertoire that is all set to get you laughing as you tuck in. We spoke to director and actor Dhruv Sachdeva – the man behind Dinner with Pricks. Here’s an insight…Where did the concept of Dinner with Pricks come from?Dinner for Pricks is an absolutely original concept that I came up with early last year. It is an original script that I have written & directed. The musical content of the show has also been written and composed by me. No other entertainment company or performance-based group has ever done something like this. It is Humour Me’s first big showcase of the different kinds of entertainment we seek to offer to our audiences. We have all either experienced or heard of ‘supper theatre’ as a concept, but this is nothing like ‘supper theatre’. Here the audiences get to experience a fictional world and dine at a fantasy restaurant which only pops up for a few hours! Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’Humour Me is an entertainment brand that aims to change the way live entertainment is perceived by people. We don’t believe entertainment is confined to an auditorium or a particular performance space. Humour Me tries to provide the most fantastical entertainment in the most unconventional spaces when you least expect it!For example- Imagine you are a working professional at a bank, and it’s just another mundane Monday, when all of a sudden the lights go out! A bunch of armed masked men storm into the bank, threatening to take the people hostage! Suddenly the entire space is magnificently light up with a burst of colours, and dancers appear out of no where. You are suddenly in a 20-minute musical performance of actors singing and dancing. Your very mundane Monday has turned into an adventure like none other! This is no flash mob. This is your lucky day, and Broadway has decided to come to your door step and entertain you! Also Read – Leslie doing new comedy special with NetflixThe novelty of the concept for me lies in the fact that one does not expect to be dining at a fictional restaurant, and be transported to a different time, setting, whilst the entertainment is not confined to raising of the curtain, or sitting in an auditorium waiting for the show to begin and in turn be entertained. This breaks the conventional approach to entertainment, here the audiences, get the chance to be a part of an experience. Every Humour Me production aims to be different. Expect the unexpected with every Humour Me production. Tell us a bit about the concept. This is the first original musical production in the country, and an experience like none other. We create a fancy French pop-up restaurant from scratch by the name of ‘Le Cigare Volant’ (The flying cigar) purely for the purpose of this showcase. Guests make reservations at a fictional restaurant, where they are greeted by a fantastical service of waiters (actors) & other odd ball characters. To their surprise they are in a full blown musical situational comedy, where the entertainment is the scandalous jabber from the next tables! Dinner For Pricks- is a social statement on the elite of Delhi, and a satire in musical form. How was the cast brought together? Most of the actors in this production are people I have worked with in the past. Over the years I have developed a network of actors & professionals whom I respect and trust in a professional sense. However, because the demands of the creative product are specific, the casting was based on script and the specific needs of the character. This is also a musical production where actors need to be able to sing and dance as well, hence there is only small niche of performers, who have studied this discipline that one can turn to. Have you guys performed this before or is Delhi the first stop?’Dinner for Pricks’ was performed last year, on the 29 July, 2012, and Le Ciagare Volant popped up at the Park Hotel, in New Delhi. There were two shows that played to packed audiences. However, this time around the creative product (script, music, characters & decor) and experience is entirely different. We want our guests to experience something entirely new, each time they visit the fantastical Le Cigare Volant.  If you have performed it earlier what sort of reactions did you guys get?The show got an absolutely overwhelming response from it’s audiences last year. Despite having played out to an audience that is well exposed, and has probably experienced the best of what ‘live entertainment’ has to offer from around the world, the show was thoroughly appreciated! Delhi hadn’t seen original live and musical content  showcased in such a unique way. The talk and buzz from the last show still hasn’t died down, and we were absolutely thrilled. How do you expect Delhi to react to a concept like this?Delhi has suddenly seen a burst of enthusiasm from various spaces on the cultural front. It is almost as if the city has come alive in the last year or so. People from across the city have become more & more receptive to live entertainment as a medium of entertainment. The people of Delhi are thirsty for intelligent entertainment and creative offerings! Thus, Delhi audiences are very receptive to new concepts. The people of Delhi love exclusivity! A show like ‘Dinner for Pricks’ really plays to that exclusivity factor as well, where one can only make reservations for this fantastical journey once in 6 months. From an entertainment perspective, I believe the Indian theatre and live performance space lacks original intellectual properties and content. Our biggest weakness is the lack of original content with some value. We are still far away from being a structured industry where original content can hold value. There is a definite need to start developing original productions. That is where Humour Me is different. We write our own scripts, music, and have content that is our own Intellectual Property. What next for Dinner for Pricks?’Dinner for Pricks’ is a creative property that we aim to bring to the city, and to other metropolitan cities in the country year on year. We want to make ‘Le Cigare Volant’ that fantastical place that people wait for months to dine in and experience.last_img read more

Should You Do Business in the Cloud

first_imgMarch 11, 2010 Register Now » By now you’ve probably heard the term “cloud computing” mentioned in the press, thanks to the PR machines of Microsoft, Sun, Google and Salesforce.com, among others. But what exactly is cloud computing, and what does it mean for small businesses?Simply put, it’s computing that is done on the Web. Rather than installing software on a computer that sits in your office, the applications that you need to run your business are stored on servers in data centers owned by the software company–“in the cloud” so to speak. You access your software and your business data via a Web browser–from any computer that is connected to the internet anywhere in the world. Some of the benefits to this approach include:Lower initial cost: Instead of buying software, you essentially rent it. You pay a monthly fee for each user. You also avoid the expense and hassle of paying for software upgrades. There is only one copy of the software running on the servers “in the cloud” and every time you log in you access the latest and greatest features without having to do anything extra.Lower overhead: Your IT infrastructures needs are greatly reduced with cloud computing. The company that “hosts” your software and data maintains the hardware, upgrades the software and keeps the service running. You can focus on running your business rather than on maintaining your computers. All you need is a computer with a fast and reliable web connection.Maximum mobility: Because your programs and data reside “in the cloud,” you can run your business from anywhere you can reach the Web. With today’s wireless laptops and smart phones, you don’t even have to sit behind a desk. You can check inventory while on a job site or run payroll while lounging poolside.Easier collaboration: Cloud computing makes it easier for you to collaborate with your clients, customers and employees while avoiding the logjam caused by sending large files. Instead of passing around a bulky digital file, such as a spreadsheet or a presentation, and hoping that all parties are looking at the most current version, you can all go to a Web address to view and work on a given project in real time.Increased safety: Cloud computing offers two key safety advantages. First, having your anti-malware software in the cloud generally means better, faster protection against the swarms of viruses, worms and other digital threats floating around out there. Rather than downloading the latest virus signatures to your computer to protect it at the endpoint, your security vendor can zap the bugs while they’re in the air.Second, having your business records backed up in the cloud better protects your data from losses due to catastrophes like a server meltdown. If your hard drive simply takes a nosedive, your data are backed up automatically and continuously at one or more remote locations. Of course, you are counting on the software company to take care of the data, but in almost all circumstances they are going to much greater lengths to double and triple protect your data because their entire business depends on it.What to Look for in the CloudSome key features to look for when shopping for cloud-based business software and services include:Interoperability: Your applications should work together in harmony, not alone in individual silos. For example, your accounting software should mesh with your customer relationship management software. You should not have to toggle back and forth between separate CRM and financial programs when talking with a customer or the phone or when planning a new marketing campaign. Once captured, data should flow freely between these critical business applications.Reliability: Because you are putting your business records and processes in the hands of a third party, you want to make sure that the vendor has a proven track record and will stay with you for the long haul. Choose carefully. If your cloud vendor suddenly goes dark, your business could do the same. Make sure the company you use has a good track record and is going to be around for the long haul. All in all, I’m a huge fan of applications “in the clouds” and recommend it over desktop software to almost all of the small businesses I talk to. The ease, affordability, mobility, accessibility and safety of cloud computing make it one less thing you need to worry about so you can focus on growing your business instead.
