Asia Cup 2018: Mohammad Azharuddin critical of Pakistan’s negative approach

first_imgFormer India captain Mohammad Azharuddin felt Pakistan took too much pressure of the India vs Pakistan match and that showed in their game as India drew first blood.India and Pakistan were to play at least two matches in the Asia Cup 2018 and the group match on Wednesday was their first encounter in Dubai, where India thrashed Pakistan by eight wickets with 21 overs to spare.Azharuddin felt that two early wickets put Pakistan under a lot of pressure and they could never shift the momentum today themselves.”It was a great win. By taking two early wickets, India put them under pressure. Pakistan looked like they felt a lot of pressure and that is when the momentum shifted.”Rohit’s captaincy was positive. He made important bowling changes and the bowlers did not disappoint him. When the team performs well, the captain’s performance is also good,” Azharuddin said in an exclusive chat with Aaj Tak.Also read: Clinical India demolish Pakistan by 8 wicketsAzhar was extremely criticial of what he thought was negative approach by Pakistan and could not understand the logic behind not bowling with an attacking mindset and setting fields accordingly.India vs Pakistan: Highlights | As it happened | Photos”I did not understand that when Pakistan only had 163 to defend and they have such good bowlers, I did not see them attack. They should have had slips and should have bowled attacking.”Pakistan bowlers did not bowl bouncers till the end or even yorkers. They just weren’t attacking.”Yesterday people were talking about India almost losing to Hong Kong but today, Pakistan’s approach was negative today and they looked under too much pressure,” Azhar felt.advertisementREAD – Manish Pandey’s sensational catch wows cricket fansAzhar pointed out the important of an opening partnership and felt that Pakistan tried to attack right from the outset, which was the mistake they made.”India controlled the game from the first over. This is why opening partnership is so important. If you lose two wickets up, it gets tough. If India had lost two early wickets too, may be they would have come under pressure too. You can’t start hitting right from the outset, that was Pakistan’s mistake I feel.”Sarfraz Ahmed admits Pakistan stumped by Kedar JadhavWasim Akram agreed with Azharuddin and felt that Pakistan batsmen tried to go after good bowlers and that brought their doom and put them under pressure.”It was tough to defend 163. This is Pakistan’s home ground and the stage was set that they will win the toss and bat and two wickets fell and they lost it. I have been crying for two weeks that Kuldeep will trouble and he got India a main wicket. Also, they did not see Kedar bowl and blindly kept trying to hit him. I understand these people are young but they should give respect to a bowler,” Akram told Aaj Tak.READ – Pakistan crumbled under pressure vs India, says Harbhajan SinghAkram felt that this win will give India a lot of confidence and Pakistan will now have a mindset where doubts will creep in the next time they face each other.”Now India will get a lot of confidence and for Pakistan, you will start thinking about the mistakes and it gets negative.”Hong Kong had a partnership and a patch but I knew India will win. Now the way India dominated Pakistan, when they play next, Pakistan will have doubts in their mind, should they bat first or bowl and what they should do.”This is why I say that before such matches, these players should switch off their social media and news but these young boys won’t listen. It’s like they can’t breath without social media.”Gavaskar also felt that Pakistan batsmen played silly shots and gave away their wickets instead of being patient and playing out the overs.”The way India played was extremely good, good overall performance. Early on when Bhuvneshwar and Bumrah bowled so well it was tough but then Babar Azam and Shoaib Malik got a partnership going but Kuldeep’s ball that got Babar was excellent. After that it looked like Pakistan batsmen were in a hurry and that’s why they lost quick wickets and it was tough to come back from there.”Even when Amir was batting fine, Hasan played immaturely. There was no need, you had to stay till 50 overs and get a bit more runs for the bowlers to defend. It looked like Pakistan didn’t think before batting.advertisement”India even fielded well, Manish Pandey’s catch and even other catches which went high up. Zaman’s catch, Chahal had to run and take. India played like a team and all-round performance,” Gavaskar said at Aaj Tak.last_img read more
