India women’s cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur demoted to constable by Punjab Police

first_imgIndia Women’s T20 team captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been demoted to constable. She was posted as a trainee Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) with Punjab Armed Police. A formal communication on the demotion was expected to be made later on Tuesday, official sources told India Today.”She is being retained as a constable till she improves her qualification and submits a valid degree. The decision has been taken and orders were under process,” said Raveen Thukral, media advisor to Punjab chief minister Captain Amrinder Singh,.The chief minister’s decision was made after the bachelor degree certificate submitted by Harmanpreet was found to be bogus.According to sources, police officials approached authorities at the Meerut-based Chaudhary Charan Singh University in April to get the degree verified. Harmanpreet had submitted the document in March this year when she was appointed as DSP.Police authorities were reluctant to speak on the issue as the final call was taken by the Punjab chief minister, who had himself honoured the cricketer in March after she was relieved by Indian Railways as Office Superintendent.”The bachelor degree certificate submitted by Harmanpreet has found to be fake.Further action is to be taken by the higher authorities,” Commandant, 80th Battalion, Punjab Armed Police, Raghbir Singh said.Sources said state government authorities were not in a mood to take any punitive action against Harmanpreet except the demotion. A bachelor’s degree is a pre-requisite to be appointed Deputy Superintendent of Police even if the appointment is from the sports quota.advertisementHowever, submitting a fake degree is a serious crime and according to law, Harmanpreet can be booked for fraud and cheating.Interestingly enough, Harmanpreet’s degree was not verified by the Railway authorities which appointed her Office Superintendent a year ago.She had even completed the first year of her tenure.Captain Amrinder Singh had not only offered a DSP’s post for Harmanpreet but had also intervened with Railway authorities to waive off her remaining contract period. Ironically, he has now been compelled to demote her.Harmanpreet’s father Harminder Singh and other family members refused to come on record. Harminder had earlier confirmed to India Today that Harmanpreet finished her studies from a Moga school.According to the bogus degree certificate submitted by Harmanpreet, she graduated in 2011 from Chaudhary Charan Singh University which was unfounded.last_img read more
