Villaraigosa plans to ask legislators to restore millions of dollars in gas-tax revenue earmarked for transportation projects that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger wants to use for other programs. The governor’s proposal would mean a loss of nearly $230 million to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which will consider fare increases on Thursday to help close a budget deficit. The Metro proposal would increase some fares as much as 400 percent, which transportation advocates say would create a hardship for low-income residents. Villaraigosa, who sits on the Metro board, has called for increases of 5 percent annually, but notes the state money is needed to reduce the transit agency’s deficit.last_img read more
